Remote Heating Reduction Control

Remote Heating Reduction Control

How much are you spending heating rooms that nobody is using?

For properties with dozens or hundreds of individually heated rooms, unnecessary heating can quietly become a significant energy cost.

A bedroom, student room or guest room may remain heated even when it is empty. Multiply that across an entire property and the wasted energy can quickly add up.

Remote Heating Reduction Control uses occupancy sensing, temperature monitoring and wireless controls to automatically manage electric heating according to whether a room is being used.

The result is a smarter way to manage heating across the property – without relying on occupants to remember to turn heaters down.

Heat the rooms that need heating. Reduce heating where they don’t. Control it all remotely.

Stop paying to heat empty rooms

Traditional electric heating relies heavily on people managing their own room temperature.

That creates an obvious problem.

A room can be left heated after someone leaves, kept warmer than necessary or simply remain at its normal temperature when it is unoccupied.

Remote Heating Reduction Control changes that.

Occupancy and temperature sensors provide the system with information about what is happening in each room. The heating can then be programmed to respond automatically.

For example, a room can maintain its normal temperature while occupied and automatically reduce to a lower temperature after a predetermined period without occupancy.

When the room is occupied again, the system can respond accordingly.

Instead of relying on people to manage the heating, the property can manage it automatically.

Designed for properties with lots of rooms

The real opportunity comes when this is applied across a large number of rooms.

Care homes
Manage heating across bedrooms and other individually heated areas while maintaining appropriate temperatures when rooms are occupied.

HMOs
Reduce unnecessary heating across individual bedrooms and communal areas without relying on tenants to adjust heaters when they leave.

Purpose-Built Student Accommodation
Manage heating across large numbers of student rooms from a central system rather than manually managing individual heaters.

Hotels and guest accommodation
Use occupancy information to help reduce heating when rooms are vacant and manage temperatures more efficiently.

Other multi-room properties
Where electric heating is installed across multiple rooms or areas, occupancy-based control can provide an opportunity to reduce unnecessary energy use.

One system. Central control.

Managing hundreds of individual heaters can be difficult.

The system brings room information together through a central dashboard, giving property managers visibility across the building without having to visit individual rooms.

Depending on the system configuration, managers can:

  • View room occupancy and temperature
  • Adjust heating settings remotely
  • Set temperature limits and schedules
  • Review historical room data
  • Identify rooms or areas behaving differently
  • Manage large numbers of heating devices from one platform

The technology uses LoRaWAN wireless communication, allowing sensors and heating controls to communicate across larger properties without extensive cabling.

That means less time managing individual heaters – and much greater visibility of what is happening across the property.

How does the system work?

The solution combines three main elements across the property.

Room sensors
Wireless sensors detect occupancy and temperature within each room. This information allows the system to determine whether heating should be maintained or reduced.

The sensors can also build a history of room conditions and usage, providing useful information about how the property is actually being used.

Wireless heating controls
A wireless control device connects to the electric heater, allowing the heating to be controlled remotely.

Settings can be configured around the requirements of the property, including the temperature required when occupied and the level to which heating is reduced when a room becomes vacant.

Central dashboard
Information from the individual rooms is brought together into a central platform.

Property managers can view room status, temperature and historical information, as well as make adjustments without having to access each room individually.

The savings opportunity starts with your property

The financial opportunity will depend on the number of rooms, existing heating arrangements, occupancy patterns and current electricity costs.

That means the starting point isn’t a generic savings percentage.

It is your property and your numbers.

We can look at:

  • How many rooms are individually heated
  • The type of electric heating installed
  • Current heating settings and schedules
  • Typical occupancy patterns
  • Current electricity costs
  • How much control you currently have over individual rooms

From this, we can assess whether automated heating control could make commercial sense for your property.

The bigger the property and the greater the amount of unnecessary heating, the greater the opportunity to investigate.

More than just remote control

The value isn’t simply being able to turn heaters on and off remotely.

By combining occupancy, temperature and historical data, property managers can gain a much clearer understanding of how heating is actually being used.

That can highlight:

  • Rooms regularly heated while unoccupied
  • Heating patterns that could be changed
  • Areas with unusual temperature behaviour
  • Opportunities to improve heating schedules
  • Changes in occupancy and room usage
  • Potential sources of unnecessary energy consumption

This turns heating from something that is largely managed room by room into something that can be actively monitored and managed across the property.

Is your property heating more rooms than it needs to?

If you manage an HMO, PBSA, care home, hotel or other multi-room property with electric heating, there may be a straightforward question worth asking:

How much of your heating bill is paying to heat rooms that nobody is using?

BSUK can review your existing arrangements and assess whether remote, occupancy-based heating control could reduce unnecessary energy consumption.

All we need to start is some basic information about your property, heating and energy costs.
