Carbon Reporting – SECR & PPN

Carbon Reporting – SECR & PPN

Is your business ready for its carbon reporting requirements?

Carbon reporting is becoming an increasingly important part of business compliance, public-sector procurement and supply-chain requirements.

For some businesses, Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR) requires energy use and greenhouse gas emissions to be disclosed within the annual report. For businesses bidding for relevant central government contracts, a Carbon Reduction Plan (CRP) may also be required as part of the procurement process.

Getting the reporting right is important. But carbon reporting can also provide something more useful than compliance alone.

It can give you a clearer understanding of where your emissions come from, where energy and resources are being used and where there may be opportunities to reduce costs.

BSUK can help you understand what applies to your business, gather the relevant information, calculate your emissions and prepare clear, credible reporting.

Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR)

SECR applies to quoted companies and to qualifying large unquoted companies and LLPs, subject to the relevant exemptions and group reporting rules.

For unquoted companies and LLPs, the qualifying thresholds include more than 250 employees, turnover of more than £36 million and a balance sheet total of more than £18 million, with at least two of the three criteria applying.

SECR reporting includes information on energy use and associated greenhouse gas emissions, together with other required disclosures.

BSUK can help you:

  • Establish whether your organisation is within scope
  • Gather and review the relevant energy and emissions data
  • Calculate your greenhouse gas emissions
  • Apply the appropriate reporting methodology
  • Prepare the information required for your annual reporting
  • Review previous reporting for consistency and completeness

The aim is to make sure your reporting is accurate, clear and appropriate for your business.

Carbon Reduction Plans for public-sector procurement

If you are bidding for relevant central government contracts, you may need to provide a Carbon Reduction Plan (CRP) as part of the procurement process.

The current PPN 006 applies to relevant central government procurements above £5 million per year including VAT, where the measure is relevant and proportionate. It requires bidding suppliers to provide a CRP confirming their commitment to achieving Net Zero by 2050 and setting out their carbon footprint and environmental management measures.

A compliant CRP needs to include the required greenhouse gas emissions information and be published and appropriately approved and signed off.

BSUK can help you prepare a Carbon Reduction Plan that covers the required information, including relevant Scope 1, Scope 2 and Scope 3 emissions, together with your carbon reduction commitments and environmental management measures.

That means your CRP is prepared for the procurement requirement rather than simply being a generic sustainability statement.

More than just calculating your carbon footprint

Your carbon footprint tells you more than how many tonnes of CO₂e your business produces.

It can also show where energy, transport, purchasing, waste and other business activities are contributing to your emissions.

That information can help identify areas where your business may be able to:

  • Reduce energy consumption
  • Improve operational efficiency
  • Reduce waste
  • Review purchasing and supply-chain activity
  • Improve transport and travel practices
  • Reduce associated operating costs

The objective is to make your carbon reporting useful to the business, not simply another compliance exercise.

Why does carbon reporting matter?

Carbon information is increasingly being requested by more than regulators.

Customers, procurement teams, larger organisations and supply-chain partners may also want to understand the carbon performance of the businesses they work with.

Having reliable carbon information can therefore help your business:

Meet reporting requirements
Understand what information needs to be reported and when.

Support procurement
Provide the carbon information and Carbon Reduction Plan required for relevant public-sector opportunities.

Understand your emissions
See where your carbon footprint comes from and which activities contribute most significantly.

Identify opportunities
Use the information to investigate energy use, purchasing, waste and other areas where improvements may be possible.

Demonstrate progress
Show customers and other stakeholders that your business understands its emissions and is taking steps to manage them.

Turning carbon data into something useful

Good carbon reporting starts with reliable information.

We work with you to understand your business, identify the relevant emissions sources, gather the required data and turn it into clear reporting.

Once you understand your carbon footprint, the next question is what you can do about it.

Where appropriate, BSUK can help you look at practical opportunities to reduce emissions, improve efficiency and reduce unnecessary costs.

Your carbon report should tell you more than how much carbon your business produces.

It should help you understand where you can improve.
