Your water bill may be hiding money you didn’t know you were losing

Most businesses scrutinise their electricity and gas costs.

Water is often different.

The bills arrive, they get paid and everyone assumes the account is correct. But water and wastewater charging can be surprisingly complex, and problems can sit unnoticed for years.

Paying your water bill on time doesn’t mean you’re paying the right amount.

At BSUK, we carry out a forensic review of your water and wastewater costs, going far beyond a routine check of your latest bill.

We look for incorrect charges, missed savings, billing issues, historic overpayments and anything else that could be costing your business unnecessarily.

We don’t just check your bills. We investigate them.

Our review goes far deeper than simply checking whether the figures on an invoice add up.

We examine the detail behind your charges and, where necessary, investigate what is actually happening at your premises.

This can include:

  • Detailed analysis of your water and wastewater billing
  • Tariffs and charging arrangements
  • Metering and consumption
  • Leakage and abnormal usage
  • Drainage and surface water charges
  • Trade effluent charges where applicable
  • Charges that may not accurately reflect the services being provided
  • Historic overpayments and potential refunds
  • Opportunities to reduce future costs

And if the paperwork raises questions, we can take the investigation beyond the bills with a non-intrusive site survey.

That means we’re not simply asking: “Does this bill look right?”

We’re asking: “Are you being charged correctly for the services you’re actually receiving?”

What could that mean for your business?

It could mean identifying an ongoing saving.

It could mean recovering money that has previously been overpaid.

It could mean correcting an issue that has been costing you money for years.

Or it could simply confirm that your account has been thoroughly checked and you’re paying the right amount.

Either way, you know where you stand.

And there is no upfront cost

You don’t need to commission an expensive consultancy exercise to find out whether there is an opportunity.

We can carry out the initial review on a no-win, no-fee, performance-related basis.

If we don’t identify a proven saving or recoverable claim, there is no fee for the work.

Is your water account really as accurate as you think?

If nobody has carried out a detailed review, you won’t know what might have been missed.

What does a forensic water review actually involve?

Once we have your water and wastewater billing information, the investigation begins.

We normally start with around 12 months of invoices and analyse the account at a detailed level rather than simply looking at total annual spend.

We examine the charges being applied, how they have been calculated and whether they appear appropriate for your premises.

Where something doesn’t look right, we investigate further.

We can take the investigation beyond the paperwork

Sometimes the information contained in the bills is enough to identify an issue.

Sometimes it isn’t.

Where further investigation is justified, and with your approval, a non-intrusive site survey can be carried out.

This allows us to look at the physical situation at your premises and establish whether what you’re being charged for accurately reflects the services actually being provided.

That could involve investigating metering, consumption, leakage or other factors that aren’t necessarily obvious from an invoice alone.

What happens when we find something?

Identifying an issue is only the beginning.

Where a saving, incorrect charge or potential historic overpayment is identified, we can work through the issue with the relevant water company on your behalf.

We investigate the evidence, submit the appropriate claim or correction and then monitor the process through to resolution.

Where a retrospective claim is justified, we can also pursue money that may have been overpaid in previous years.

The aim is not simply to find a problem.

It’s to get it corrected, recover what is genuinely due and reduce the chance of the problem continuing.

What do you need to do?

Very little.

To get started, we normally need:

  • Around 12 months of water and wastewater bills
  • Authority to investigate the account on your behalf
  • Relevant site information where required
  • Access to the premises if a physical survey is necessary

We do the detailed investigation for you.

You don’t need to know what we’re looking for before we start. That’s our job.

What happens at the end?

You’ll receive a clear explanation of what we’ve found and, where applicable, the savings or refund opportunities identified.

If action is required, we’ll work through the process with the water company and keep you informed.

If nothing is found, you still have the reassurance that your account has been properly scrutinised.

Don’t assume your water bill is correct simply because you’ve always paid it

A detailed review could uncover an issue that has been sitting unnoticed for years or confirm that everything is as it should be. Either way, you get an answer.

Find out if your water account has been costing you more than it should.
